Frequently asked questions about therapy for depression
1Is being sad the same as being depressed?
The feeling of sadness is a natural emotional response to something that feels sad, and is also a component of grief. Feeling sad about a death of a loved one, a pet, a layoff, a breakup are all examples of situations and experiences where being in a state of sadness is natural. Depression is like next-level sadness mixed with several other feelings and behaviors, over the course of several months or years, that has resulted in a total change in how you see things, think of things, interact with others and yourself. Things went from full color to sun-faded pastels to grayscale.
2How do I know if I’m depressed?
- Waking up unmotivated and trying to “push through” on autopilot
- Realizing what used to bring you joy no longer does
- Your sleep is off (not enough, too much, can’t fall asleep, shitty quality sleep)
- Difficulty staying present with others because you’ve gone off in thought
- Your relationship to food has changed in a negative way (no or low appetite, food tastes off, eating more than intended, restricting your eating for control, forgetting to eat)
- Feeling alone and lonely, even when around others
- Your motivation to do things you enjoy has decreased or is gone
- Having a drink has gone from celebrating with others to either drinking alone or drinking to commiserate
